Nothing is complete yet. Here is the rough draft for umbrella
Corporations, and once that is complete i will post a second
essay called Good when our money leaves US territory?
Thank you for your patience.
Umbrella Corporations by Austin Wright. April 24, 2007.
Umbrella Corporations are dangerous. Having already secured a
foothold within the market, strategically branching out into the
investments of complimentary goods (or different products
entirely) tends to secure a stronger position for that corporation.
Because of actions such as this, what America has is not a free
market, in the traditional sense of the word. Trying to get your
food products on the shelves, you’re suddenly competing with
billion dollar industries reaping profits from Kraft macaroni and
cheese [owned by Philip-Morris], or Aunt Jemima’s syrup [owned
by Pepsi-Co].
It isn’t just the food industry that has been taken over by
umbrella corporations, the anime and manga scene has been
deemed profitable and the negative effects are already able to be
seen:
CMX, which is owned by DC Comics, which is owned by
AOL/Time Warner, is already polluting the Manga section.
Seeing how shelf space is limited, smaller publishers like Go!
Comi and ICEkunion are no doubt affected by this.
There isn’t really hope when dealing with umbrella corporations,
they’re established and tend to branch off into markets that are
secure. However, by principle alone, they should be boycotted.
AOL/Time Warner does not need or deserve your money—
independent publishers do.
Absolutely do not purchase products from CMX.
